I wanted a dog for as long as I can remember, but I wasn't allowed to have one growing up and later developed allergies. As an adult with a demanding career, I kept telling myself it wasn't the right time. Then I saw Star on the Humane Society of Greater Miami's Instagram. I went back and forth before realizing there might never be a "perfect" time — and if not now, when? I literally cried like a child when my husband agreed we could open our home to her. When we finally went to the shelter to meet Star, she immediately jumped into my arms, surprising even the staff. That pretty much settled it: she was meant to come home with us. Since adopting Star, she's brought a sense of balance to my life. No matter how busy or stressful my day has been, she gets me away from my desk, outside and into the moment. She gives me something to look forward to every day and has filled our home with affection, laughter, and a sense of purpose. Another fun fact: Somehow, despite my history with dog allergies, I don't seem to be allergic to her. I joke all the time that Star is magic. And maybe she really is. We thought we were rescuing her, but meeting the right dog at exactly the right time feels a lot like she rescued me, too.
Star is affectionate, curious, stubborn, dramatic, and absolutely convinced she is the most important person in every room. She loves meeting people, exploring Miami, and keeping a close eye on whatever her humans are doing. She can go from sweet and cuddly to hilariously judgmental with one look, which inspired her Instagram personality. We joke that Star isn't a pet — she's a public figure with two full-time staff members who happen to call themselves Mom and Dad.
Star's greatest talent might be making people notice her. Whether she's posing in sunglasses, politely requesting a treat, or simply giving someone one of her signature looks, she has an uncanny ability to make strangers smile. Since being adopted, she's embraced Miami life — waterfront walks, dog parks, restaurant patios and plenty of new experiences — with confidence and curiosity. Her biggest accomplishment, though, has been how quickly she learned to trust, love, and settle into her new family. She has only been home for a few months, but she's already made herself unforgettable.
