The minute I saw Lupita’s picture on the shelter page, I knew. I don’t even know how to explain it — I just knew she was mine. I ran to the shelter and put a hold on her right away. Because she had a microchip, I had to wait three days before I could bring her home. I went back every day while I waited. Since then, Lupe has completely taken over my heart and our house. She is obsessed with food, always wants to be close to me, and sleeps pressed right up against me like there is absolutely no other place she could possibly sleep. I already had Panchi, and I foster dogs too, so dogs have always been a huge part of my life. But Lupe was different. From the beginning, there was no question in my mind. She wasn’t a foster. She was my dog. My heart has changed shape since she came into my life. Now it is permanently shaped like her and her sister, Panchita.
Lupe is sweet, clingy, funny, stubborn, and completely obsessed with food 😂 For everything she went through before coming to us, she is incredibly loving and trusting. She is calm most of the time, but she has a big personality in that little body. And somehow, people fall in love with her very easily. Even people who have never met her in person ask about her and root for her. That is just Lupita.
Lupe’s biggest accomplishment is how far she has come. When we adopted her, she needed a lot of medical care. Her mouth was in terrible condition, and she ended up needing 27 teeth extracted. Earlier this year, we also caught a mammary tumor early, and it was Stage 1 cancer. Through all of that, she has stayed sweet, loving, and ridiculously trusting. I think one of her most special qualities is the way people connect with her. The Miami Dachshund Club and Little Paws Dachshund Rescue supported her from the beginning, and even people who have never met her personally know her story, ask about her, and love her. She has been through a lot, but she is still just Lupita — loving, food-obsessed, attached to us, and very happy to be home.
